STORY BEHIND CELEBRATING THIS DAY

ambedkar jayanti is a festival celebrated annually in India on April 14, the anniversary of the birth of the Indian jurist and economist, and social reformer, Babasaheeb Ambedkar. He is best known for his role as the main architect of India’s Constitution.

The name ‘ambedkar’ comes from the Sanskrit word for ‘father’ and ‘jayanti’ which translates to ‘day’ or ‘festival’. The name ‘Ambedkar’ is derived from the name ‘Bhimrao’ Ambedkar and ‘Jayanti’ meaning ‘day of birth’.

The festival is celebrated on the 14th of April every year on Ambedkar’s birthh anniversary. People offer flowers, light candles and organise cultural events on this day.

THE MAIN ARCHITECT OF INDIAN CONSTITUTION

Ambedkar Jayanti is a public holiday declared in many states of India and all government offices, educational institutions and colleges in the country are closed on this date. The founder of the Dalit rights movement and the main architect of India’s Constitution, Dr.Bharat Ambedkar, was born on 14 April 1891 in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh. Babasaheb Jayanti (as his followers call him) is celebrated annually to honor his many contributions to the development of India.

As a Dalit belonging to the Mahar caste, who were considered untouchables in Hinduism, Dr. Ambedkar converted to Buddhism on 14 October 1956 in Nagpur with the help of 500,000 supporters after having studied the religion for several years. He is well-known for his role in eliminating the social stigma of untouchability and for leading a campaign to uplift and empower Dalits in India as he believed that they should never be deprived of their rights within the framework of Hinduism.

FROM STRUGGLE TO LAW MINISTER OF INDIA

Babasaheb Ambedkar was born into the Mahar caste and was discriminated against economically and socially as a child before he converted to Buddhism. Most of the painful experiences that shaped Babasahebi’s life can be found in his autobiography, Waiting For A Visa.

On 29 August 1947, Dr. Ambedkar was appointed by the President of India as the Chairperson of the Committee Drafting the Constitution of Independent India. Later on the Independence of India, he was made the Law Minister of India.

WRITING INDIAN CONSTITUTION

By writing the Constitution of India, Dr. BR Ambedkar not only violated the social conventions that Hindu Shudras were supposed to follow in the footsteps of caste supremacists, but he also changed their mindset and encouraged them to educate themselves and struggle for their rights.

Not only did he write the Constitution of India that gave equal rights to everyone, but he also ended the monopoly that Hindu Brahmins (Shudras), Kshatriya and Vaishyas had in education, in the military, in trade, in social standards – who considered themselves superior over Shudras or untouchables.

Dr. Ambedkar spent most of his life promoting and speaking out for the rights of the downtrodden. He published scores of journals and defended the rights of Dalits. He made important contributions to the establishment of the State of India, wrote the Indian Constitution, gave ideas that formed the basis of the RBI and played an important role in the promotion of gender equality.
