Confronted with criticism from the BJP over his remarks at an election campaign rally in Ron, Gadag district, Congress leader Mallikarjun kharge said that Prime Minister Modi is like a “poisonous snake”. “Don’t try to lick it to check if it’s poisonous or not, you’re dead if you taste it,” he said. “I didn’t call him that, I said the ideology of the BJP is poisonous and if you support it, you’re dead.” Kharge later clarified in a series of tweets that he was referring to the “hate politics” of the BJP. “I never meant to hurt anybody’s feelings and if I did, it was unintentional,” he wrote in Hindi. He added that the Congress’s campaign was not personal, but an “ideological battle”.
Addressing another rally at Shirahatti later in the day, Kharge said: “I just said that there is a difference in our ideology. What I said was that… the BJP-RSS ideology is poisonous.”
Meanwhile, the BJP’s Karnataka unit lodged a complaint against Kharge with the office of the state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO).
